How the Brake Resistors used in Crane?

The use of brake resistors in crane equipment is critical to the safe and efficient operation of machinery. The working method of the lifting equipment in the crane is: the motor works in the power generation state when moving downwards, and the motor works when moving upwards. If no braking resistor is added, the electricity generated by the motor will directly act on the inverter module, causing frequent damage to the module.

During the motor deceleration process, excessive equipment inertia will turn the motor into a generator, causing the motor to supply power to the inverter in the opposite direction. This may cause an over-voltage alarm in the inverter. In order to solve this problem, the method of increasing the resistor power (appropriately reducing the resistance value) can be used to release excess energy. In addition, some brake resistors can provide reverse power supply to the power loop, which is particularly useful in variable frequency systems with a common DC bus and helps save energy.

The brake resistor plays a vital role in preventing over-voltage of the frequency converter during deceleration, shortening the deceleration distance, and improving the overall dynamic performance of the lifting equipment. Although the built-in brake of the motor is mainly used for final parking braking, it is not effective for deceleration braking. This is where resistive braking comes into play as it only affects the motor during deceleration and has no effect once the motor is stopped. To keep the motor stationary under potential load, a brake must be used.

In terms of the type of brake resistors used in lifting equipment, aluminum case resistors and ripple resistors are usually used to start the load. These braking resistors can also be stacked on top of each other, but special consideration must be given to safety and correct installation. If the number of resistors exceeds 4, they must be placed on a special metal frame while maintaining a distance of 80mm between adjacent two sets of resistors. Additionally, a heat shield can be installed in the middle for extra protection. It is necessary to ensure that the screws are firmly grounded to prevent accidents or electric shock to workers during installation.

In summary, the application of brake resistors  in crane equipment is crucial to manage energy release during deceleration, prevent damage to the frequency converter, and improve overall performance and safety. Proper installation and understanding of the function of a braking resistor are critical to the efficient operation of crane machinery.
